An International Workshop on the Validation of
Satellite-based Land Surface Phenology Products

Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, 18 June 2010

This workshop is being held in conjunction with the Phenology 2010 conference at Trinity College, 14-17 June 2010. The workshop is being sponsored by the USGS through the USA National Phenology Network and Trinity College, Dublin.

Objective
To bring together producers of continental- to global-scale land surface phenology products derived satellite data; as well as those collecting field, tower, or airborne data useful for validating those products, to develop an international protocol to quantify the accuracy of these products and initiate a validation-based inter-comparison.

Agenda

8:30 −  8:40     Welcome (Alison Donnelly, Ned Dwyer)
8:40 −  8:55     Update on LPV activities (Joanne Nightingale)
8:55 −  9:10     Charge to meeting (Jeff Morisette)

Discussion

  •   Nomination of LPV Phenology focus group co-chair
  •   Development of Phenology product “applications” matrix
  •   Validation vs product assessment of spatial and temporal patterns
  •   Meshing field – satellite and scaling issues
  •   Utility of citizen science for product assessment
  •   Potential product inter-comparison, potential sites, methods, coordination and data sharing
  •   Meeting publication and writing tasks
  •   Sources for funding or other resources to conduct a validation based inter-comparison
  •   Potential date/scientific meeting for next LPV phenology focus group workshop
